(This post has been updated to provide quotes from Mike Derrick in response to Stefanik's campaign.)

WATERTOWN, N.Y. --  Just a few hours ago, I posted about the new TV ad from NY-21 Candidate, Democrat Mike Derrick.

In that ad, he shows a picture of current Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and tells the audience she supports TPP, the Trans Pacific Partnership. He even says Donald Trump 'is right' in opposing it.

Derrick says the TPP would ship jobs overseas.

But Stefanik's campaign says that claim of her supporting TPP is just flat out not true.

Lenny Alcivar, from her campaign, reached out to me just a bit ago with this quote which says she has never supported TPP.

"Mike Derrick's false ad is an attempt to deceive voters about Elise's strong, bipartisan record of results for the North Country.  Elise Stefanik has never supported TPP, and the news citations used to support Mike Derrick's blatantly false claim are about TPA, not TPP. Either Mike Derrick doesn't know the difference between TPP and TPA, or he knowingly misrepresented her position because he has no new ideas of his own."

The links Derrick's campaign provided as a way to back up its claim, seem to point to stories about TPA and not TPP. Although a case can be made that the two are linked in some ways.

TPA is the Trade Promotion Authority, also known as Fast Track. For more on the TPA, read here.

But the Derrick Campaign says you can't truly support one without supporting the other.

Here is what Mike Derrick just sent me:

“Once again, Congresswoman Stefanik is trying to cover her tracks. She must think North Country voters aren't smart enough to see through her Washington, DC double talk. She did indeed vote for legislation that fast tracked the approval of the TPP trade deal — a deal that would decimate North Country jobs. Why would she vote to fast track its approval if she doesn’t support it?”

“She's either a typical DC flip-flopper, or she supports a job-killing trade deal. Either way, North Country residents can do better than this kind of failed leadership. But as usual, what Elise Stefanik says is not what Elise Stefanik does.”

“Mike Derrick would be the first to applaud her if she would change her mind on TPP. She should stop siding with her corporate donors and Washington insiders and stand firmly against it, as Mike clearly does. She can’t have it both ways.”
