For years, being a survivor of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church was often an isolating experience. But with an increase in national attention, including a new lawsuit, the Diocese of Ogdensburg is reaching out.

"There's been a lot of calls from the faithful for us to release those names so we thought we needed to be responsive," said Diocese of Ogdensburg Communications Director Darcy Fargo.

They've released 28 names of former Clergy members who were accused. Most of them are deceased, moved far away, or are non-active members.

"A priest who served their parish historically might be on this list. And we know that there is going to be some hurt. We know there is going to be some anger," says Fargo.

Releasing the names of clergy members accused of sexual assault wasn't an easy thing for the Diocese of Ogdensburg. They say they took a lot of factors into consideration, so they can understand why other Diocese haven't gotten on board yet.

"You're trying to balance the needs to conflicting groups here, so it's a tough decision," said Fargo.

The diocese has spent $5.5 million to support about 37 victims under the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program. A national program dedicated to compensating victims.

"Healing and reconciliation both for the victims who had these horrible things done to them and for the faithful who are experiencing a lot of anger and hurt right now," says Fargo.

Identifying priests of sexual assault may not be traditional within the catholic community, but officials hope this action will bring peace for victims.
