CLAYTON, N.Y. — Whether it's boating, camping or a weekend trip, Clayton is usually the place to be every summer.

Business owners like Susan Lyth says it has been an exceptional year.

"With the river at our front doorstep, there's many tourists that come from all over the state and other states and from far and wide," said Lyth, owner of Clayton Popcorn Company.

This, compared to last year, when the river wasn't just at the doorstep: it was flooding through many North Country businesses.

But this summer's warm weather and lack of rain brought more tourists to the area than expected.

"It's been way busier. Last year was pretty slow for everyone around here. But with the water levels being pretty perfect, it's been an amazing summer for everyone,” said Fiona Lawlee, RAKS Store employee.

With the brutal North Country winter, many shops focus their hours during the summer.

With Labor Day unofficially marking the end of the season, the transition is beginning.

"Unfortunately we won't be here this winter. But we are hoping to find another location and do pop-in shops for Christmas,” said Lyth.

Using many different methods to make last-minute money.

"We have our 40 percent off sale right now for our clothing so that likes to bring people in too,” said Lawlee.

And hoping for another successful summer next year.
