ILION, N.Y. -- One-person was taken to the hospital following a fire in Herkimer County on Monday morning.

Three others had to be rescued from a apartment building on the corner East Main Street and McCann Street in Ilion. Two were taken from the first story porch, and another from a second-floor window.

Ilion's fire chief says hot weather made their job more difficult.

"With the amount of fire that was showing upon arrival, and having to rescue three individuals, it was a great effort by the firefighters to keep it to one building and get those people out alive," said Ilion Fire Chief Robert Paddock.

Paddock says the building housed four-apartments, and appears to be destroyed.

There is no word on the condition of the person who was taken to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
