Some Neighbors in Oneida County woke up to find KKK flyers.

Deputies with the sheriff's office say this is the third complaint this summer.

They were found inside weighted Ziplock bags at the end of several driveways in a Rome neighborhood. The flyers ask residents to contact a specific Ku Klux Klan group if they're having any troubles in their neighborhood.

Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol says there is no room for any organization that encourages hatred and bigotry. However, he says, up to this point, no laws have been broken.

Maciol says the person distributing the flyers is protected by freedom of speech.

"This current flyer and the two previous incidents that we had a couple months back; they haven't crossed that line,” said Maciol. “Nowhere on the flyer does it encourage people to riot or to do illegal things or to hurt people. If it were to cross that line, or become criminal in any way whatsoever, the Sheriff's office, I mean, we'll be the first ones to file charges against them."

Similar flyers were previously distributed in Lee and Westmoreland.

New York State Police are assisting in the investigation. The Hate Crimes Task Force and the Division of Human Rights is launching a public awareness campaign to help residents report incidents.

They're asking for those with information or with home security to call (315) 736-0141.
