Sergio Garcia, the Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief of Staff at SUNY Upstate Medical University, resigned following a suspension. This comes as a result of an Albany Times Union report that found Garcia gave questionable statements during a speech last fall.

In the speech, Garcia says that while he was working as an official for the State Department he was at the scene of a bomb explosion in Afghanistan. However the Times Union found that according to an eyewitness and state department records Garcia was never at the scene of the bombing.

Garcia also claimed to have gone to law school in Oklahoma, but again the Times Union did not find record of that.

Upstate Medical University released a statement Monday:

"After an expeditious review of the troubling accusations made against Upstate Medical University's chief of staff, and at the request of Upstate President Danielle Laraque-Arena, MD, FAAP, Sergio Garcia has resigned, effective immediately. The allegations are contradictory to Upstate's shared values of being open and honest, and the president and her leadership team will work together to confirm these values are instilled at every level of the organization.”

Spectrum News made attempts to contact Garcia. He declined comment for the Times Union report.
