National Grid says it has sent out 2,100 workers throughout the region to remove downed trees and restore power due to winds Monday.

The company says wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour wreaked havoc on the grid. National Grid says the hardest hit areas have been Oneida and Oswego counties. But with your help, the company adds, work can get done faster.

"A lot of people have generators now, and one thing we caution with people is to make sure that the main breaker in their house is off when they are using a generator," said Communications Manager Patrick Stella. "If it's not, you're actually sending power back through the lines that our crews are trying to restore, and that can be a hazard to our workers. So that's one piece. The other thing is to make sure they call us."

National Grid says many people assume the company knows their power is out, but that's not always the case. You can call 1-800-867-5222.
