A treatment center that has served the Auburn community for decades is closing.

"It's a sad day, it's a sad time," said Cayuga Centers President and CEO Edward Hayes.

As many as 120 people will be laid off by Cayuga Centers.

"We are giving 90 days of notice. We are also making employees available of other opportunities," said Hayes.

Over the last several years, fewer have been enrolled at its Residential Treatment Center for youth. As a result, Cayuga Centers has lost $2 million since July.

"The program is taking a lot of resources this year, and we feel good about putting resources in a program we can turn around, but it became very clear we couldn't turn this around," said Hayes.

Although this closure means the loss of more than 100 jobs, social services professionals say that this is just another sign of the times.

"Starting to realize that the system was always very helpful," said Cayuga County Director of Social Services Ray Bizzari.

Experts say youth services are changing, with most resources being pumped into family-based programs. This shift in approach is just one reason fewer kids are entering residential treatment programs.

"We do things like functional-family therapy, multi-systemic therapy, family-support programs to keep kids from being removed to begin with," said Bizzari.

For the 14 youth currently at the center, their respective counties will be responsible for their relocation. Other family-based programs at the centers will remain operational. This means more than 600 people will remain employed with the company.
