OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The cold created some challenges for crews at a fire in the city of Oswego.

Flames were coming out of the roof of a two-apartment home, on West Bridge Street Sunday morning.

Firefighters first made sure no one was inside and then worked on putting out the flames.

The Oswego Fire Chief Randy Griffin says nobody was hurt. They did have trouble with some of the hydrants.

"It’s 20 degrees today, we had to stretch a little bit farther today.  So we called in mutual aid from Oswego town, Scriba and Minetto who assisted us in getting water supply. It really isn't a maintenance issue, it's more of a frozen hydrant, it's the weather. It's down below the frost line. Flowing water may actually freeze the hydrant so flushing the hydrants aren't really the answers either,” he said.

Griffin says a lot of water was used to put out this fire, so they were taking precautions to prevent it from running into nearby homes.

Investigators are looking into how the fire started since no one was living in the home.
