After a hectic weekend for first responders, things are starting to quiet down in the Village of Malone.

"The state of emergency was able to pass because the main area of concern passed," Mayor Joe Riccio said.

Riccio was forced to take action Saturday after the water started rising on the Salmon River.

"The ice jammed up under the Willow Street bridge. That sent the river over its banks and caused some flooding in some homes, forcing closures of streets," Riccio said.

Residents say the flooding is, unfortunately, normal in this neighborhood. This time, it caused only minor damage.

"This is kind of an habitual thing," said resident Barry Webb. "When you have a rapid freeze, there's ice, then a meltdown, and then it refreezes. Nevertheless, if you live down here, it's a concern. If you don't, people probably don't know that much about it."

Residents are breathing a sigh of relief. It could have been much worse. In Covington, more than 20 homes were evacuated with extensive damage.

"There's definitely some remediation that will take place from the areas affected by the water," Riccio said. "Again, the homes were impacted, but it wasn't as severe as it could be, like in some cases in what happened in Fort Covington."

The mayor says the focus for him is now helping residents deal with the flood's aftermath.
