Due to a lack of public transportation, commuters in Herkimer County are often forced to walk to their destination. To give them respite from the bitter cold, officials have set up designated "warming stations" throughout the county. 

There are eight different locations throughout the county, including libraries and other public buildings. These warming stations only operate during normal business hours, but some will be open during the day on Saturday.

People who need additional assistance are asked to contact the Department of Social Services or their local police, who can provide them with a place to escape the cold.

The following locations are open to the public:

  • Village of Frankfort office building, 110 Railroad Street, Frankfort -- Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Mohawk YMCA, 83 East Main Street, Mohawk -- Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Basloe Library Herkimer, 245 North Main Street, Herkimer -- Monday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thurday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Little Falls Library, 10 Waverly Place, Little Falls -- Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Little Falls YMCA, 15 Jackson Street, Little Falls -- Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Dolgeville Manheim Library, 24 N Main Street, Dolgeville -- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 11 a.m to 5 p.m. and Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Ilion Municipal Building, 45 Morgan St., Ilion -- Monday through Friday 8a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Ilion Free Public Library, 78 West St., Ilion -- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
