A recent study claims kids may not be getting enough sleep, and that can lead to serious health problems.

The medical journal Pediatrics published a study looking at the sleeping patterns of close to 5,000 9- and 10-year-olds, as well as adolescents. It concluded that many are suffering from sleep deprivation.

For kids and teens, it shows that less sleep can cause a rise in type 2 diabetes in 10 to 19-year-olds. But it not only affects their health, but also their studies.

Experts recommend kids between 6 and 12 years old get between nine and 12 hours of sleep per night. Younger kids should get even more.

The report says parents can encourage better sleep by limiting screen time on tablets, keeping a routine bedtime and avoiding caffeine.
