SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A fire at an apartment complex on Onondaga Hill forces several families to evacuate their homes Friday morning.

Two adults and a 9-month-old baby were said to be inside the unit where the fire started.

Firefighters say they escaped unharmed, and no one else was injured in the fire.

Investigators are now looking into the cause, but they believe it may have been from a heating source.

“The fire investigators are on scene right now, they're looking at a space heater, but it's still too early to tell. They have to rule out everything.  But according to the occupants they did turn on a space heater this morning because it was chilly.  Right now it's still in the preliminary stages,” said Onondaga County Sheriff Jon Seeber.

The Red Cross is assisting that family who lost their home. Crews were able to contain the fire to just the one unit.

Some of the other people living in the building may be able to return home later Friday.
