The Moving People Transportation Coalition held a "Rally for the Grid" in Hanover Square.

The community grid is one of several options being reviewed for Interstate 81. It would turn the highway into a boulevard downtown.

Supporters of the community grid plan say it would be good for city business and residents.

If the community grid is built, traffic on 81 would be diverted around the city. Some people in surrounding communities want to either replace the bridges or build a tunnel to keep the connection.

“There are lots of opportunity for reinvestment. Mixed-income housing. New businesses and also a better connection to University Hill and downtown," said supporter Damien Vadalanga. "And also a safer environment for people walking and biking ... for cars, as well."
