WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- A building had to be evacuated Monday after a fire at Beaver Meadow Apartments.

Officials say the fire started in a fourth floor apartment. A woman and her three-year-old child were inside at the time, but they made it out safely.

There is smoke and water damage throughout the building, and power had to be turned off, so tenants from all 40 units were displaced, leaving many to stay in a hotel.

"Some people will be there overnight. Other people might be there two or three days,” said Town of Watertown Fire Chief Charles Dillon. "It depends on when they get the building cleaned up."

The cause is still being investigated. However, some tenants believe a candle is to blame.
