Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger will step down at the end of this school year.

Stenger made the announcement at a meeting Friday morning, saying he will stay on until a new president is in place.

Stenger has been president at BU since 2012, with the school noting that student enrollment has risen 28% during his term. The number of full-time faculty members has also increased more than 50% since Stenger took office.

"President Harvey Stenger is a huge part of Binghamton’s success story and its emergence as a world-class university," Chancellor John King said in a statement. "His leadership has helped bring the research dollars that have turned the campus and the region into an engine of innovation and raised the profile of the university — massively increasing applications and growing academics, student life, and resources for student success."
