EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A woman jumped from a third story window during an apartment fire in East Syracuse Friday night.

Multiple fire departments were called to the Springfield Garden Apartment Complex around 11 p.m. Friday.

When they arrived there was heavy fire coming from the basement windows.

Officials say the fire started when a man fell asleep while cooking.

No one was hurt, even the woman who jumped.

"There was a bunch of people down on the ground yelling to her to jump and at first she didn't want to, but she did eventually jump and they sort of slowed her down and she came down and broke her fall," said Chris Shields, East Syracuse Fire Chief.

Shields says five apartments were damaged by the fire.

The Red Cross is assisting the victims.
