ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Saturday's snowfall made for a different landscape for people at the Ibero American Action League on Clifford Avenue. For evacuees who have relocated from hurricane stricken Puerto Rico, getting established can come with challenges.

"It can be very difficult to try to navigate the different systems,” said Hilda Rosairio, from the Ibero American Action League. “Here we have the Department of Social Services, employment agencies and many other agencies."

Whether it's looking for housing, a job or other kind of assistance, it’s where evacuees from Puerto Rico can come to seek help.

Before the housing fair on Saturday, the Rochester housing authority had already issued 50 Housing Choice Vouchers to evacuees, with another 50 planned to be distributed at the fair as well. More than 170 evacuees have applied for housing assistance to date. Many had been living in shelters since arriving in Rochester.

"We are told that there might be 700-800 families here. Some of them have gotten housing through other means,” said John Hill, from the Rochester Housing Authority. "If they haven't gotten it through other means, the housing authority is another resource that they can use."

"Just imagine everything that you have is gone, coming into a place where you don't know anyone, or you do know someone, but you're not used to people helping you," said Helen Sotomayor, a Puerto Rican evacuee.

She added, "These are the things that a lot of us are going through, having to start over. That's not easy, but there's one motto, it's once you hit the ground, there's nowhere else to go but up."
