Two men have been arrested for the vandalizing of a memorial sculpture at the VFW post in Fairport last week.

Rhys Baetzhold, 22, of Pittsford and Anthony Fennell, 18, of Perinton, were arrested and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal mischief and fifth-degree conspiracy. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says they were responsible for removing the rifle portion of a memorial at the Fairport VFW Hall early last week.

Prior to the vandalism, the bronze memorial featured empty combat boots with a rifle planted upright between them. Baetzhold was questioned by police early Sunday morning and admitted to stealing the rifle. When police arrived at Fennell’s home, they were given permission to search the house and found the rifle next to his bed.

Both Baetzhold and Fennell were given appearance tickets and are schedule to appear in Perinton Town Court on November 21.
