SPENCERPORT, N.Y. — Spencerport High School is tackling the issue of substance abuse head on.

It was the second year the school hosted the “Not My Kid” panel but the first time the Monroe County Department of Health, the county medical examiner’s office, Ogden Police Department and Gates Volunteer Ambulance participated.

The aim is to provide support for families, parents and kids struggling with questions about drugs, addiction and dangerous behavior.

"I think one of the issues you face with substance abuse is people not being willing to discuss it,” said Spencerport Principal Sean McCabe. “I think that it's important that it's brought to the light and that we're open and we have that dialogue and that discussion so people are informed and again know those challenges that students face and how best we can support them."

McCabe said they plan to hold the panel discussion every year.
