Greece Athena defeated unbeaten Webster Thomas at home Friday night, 14-7.

The Trojans were on the road for the first time this season and were hit with some adversity right from the start. Quarterback Nate Bogoniewski left the game late in the first quarter.

Enter backup Sam Sheldon. The junior took over for the Trojans at mid-field to lead them to their first score of the game to put Athena up 6-0. Receiver Kelvin Reaves had an outstanding game. The basketball star finished with 12 catches for 138 yards, including two touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

"It's never easy when you have to go with your backup quarterback. Our starter got hurt, Sam came in and did a tremendous job running the offense," said Athena head coach Rob Cerone.

Thomas got a little bit of momentum in the second half with Athena backed up into their own end zone. Collin Hill took a 31-yard punt return to the house to give the Titans a 7-6 lead.

But Athena came marching back. Sheldon lead the Trojans on an eight-play, 74-yard drive, capped off by Reave's second touchdown on the night. Reaves also hauled in the two-point conversion to put Athena up 14-7.

"I thought it was key, after that punt return, I really was proud of how the kids came out. We didn't tuck our tails, we put together and got a really nice drive, got it in the end zone," Cerone said.

Thomas had a great opportunity to tie the game up late in the fourth but fumbled on the 10 yard line.

There were three turnovers total for the Titans, including a Jake Canfield interception in the first quarter. Thomas actually out-rushed Athena 160-129 yards, but those turnovers proved to be a difference maker.

Athena's defense had another strong showing to get their team back in the win column.

"That was a great job by the defense," said Sheldon. "We bent a couple times during that game but we kept our composure and never broke. Their one touchdown came on a special teams play, our defense played a great game."

Next Saturday Athena hosts Brockport while Webster Thomas visits Canandaigua.

Our Friday Night Matchup will feature a battle of the unbeatens when Irondequoit visits Victor.
