ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Brandon Smith and Trevor O'Neil are two of the Red Wings bat boys. It's a job the two baseball fanatics take very seriously.

"I'll get here around 2:30 p.m. We're responsible for setting up the dugouts, bringing the waters out, we got to bring all the helmets out," said Smith.

During the game the Wings' bat boys are responsible for assisting players in both dugouts, making sure they have everything they need.

"It's our job to make sure they're ready. They shouldn't be having any distractions when they're trying to play a game that pretty much defines their career," said O'Neil.

The bat boys are also responsible for making sure that every ball is game ready. This takes hours of mudding each ball to ensure that they have a better grip for the pitchers.

"They come with this sort of polish on them and you want to get that off, so rubbing it off does that. It gets rid of the slipperiness of it," said O'Neil.

"I think one thing people don't realize is we go through over 120 baseballs a game," said Smith.

Even with the hard work, it's a job they wouldn't trade for anything.

"It's just cool, being a big baseball fan, seeing all these guys come through. This year alone we've met Dustin Pedroia, Jose Bautista, Ronald Acuna we've seen play," said Smith.

"It feels like a ball game every day because you're just with the players and having fun. It's just a bonus to actually get paid for it," said O'Neil. "You feel grateful, everyday that you get to walk on the field. It will be a memory, for sure."
