BATAVIA, N.Y. -- Talking is not easy for Jim Kelly following reconstructive jaw surgery in March, but nothing really is during his third bout with cancer. Kelly's not able to eat solid foods until September and is down at least 20 pounds.

The Bills all-time great learned recently he'll receive the Jimmy V Award at the ESPYs in July. The award, named for college basketball coach and broadcaster Jim Valvano, is "given to a deserving member of the sporting world who has overcome great obstacles through physical perseverance and determination."

Kelly took a couple swings at his annual golf tournament, and said he's carrying on the late Valvano's message – don't give up, don't ever give up.

"I just know in my heart that the good Lord's put me in this situation to help, not only the people out there suffering from cancer, but little kids too that are going through tough times to never give up. Keep fighting because you never know."

Kelly's next surgery is June 21, just days before his annual camp, which Jim plans on attending.
