PITTSFORD, N.Y. — St. John Fisher softball posted a 113-34 record over the three seasons leading into this year — an impressive .768 winning percentage. Not coincidentally, that's when Bari Mance became head coach and pitcher Lindsey Thayer's freshman year began.

Thayer was the New York State MVP her senior year of high school in the Adirondacks. Since then, Thayer has been nearly unhittable.

"I came to school just wanting to be able to play softball, just keep extending it as long as I could and whatever was going to happen, was gonna happen," Thayer said. "I'm grateful for all the opportunities that we've had as a team, but it's unimaginable. You don't ever go to school thinking, I'm gonna be a runner-up for a National Championship as a junior in college."

Now a three-time All-American, her career numbers are staggering: More than 1,400 career strikeouts, within striking distance of the all-time NCAA Division III record.

"When you're striking out 12-13 players on average a game, that's been her average her sophomore and junior year and right now she's a little over 12 strikeouts per game," Manced said. "When those numbers add up, it's quite incredible. She's had over 1,300 strikeouts in her career, her 1,000th career strikeout was at the end of her first perfect game, which was just fitting and I thought that was the coolest stat I had seen or heard. There can't be too many people out there that have that."

Her catchers call the pitches and Thayer does have the right to shake them off but, she usually doesn't.

''We usually stick to a general routine, we don't really stray from it — don't fix what's not broken, right?" Thayer said.

Her fielder's have a great view of the game, sometimes, it gets a little monotonous.

"We do joke about that a little bit, they say they don't get enough action, but I'm not about to let up," Thayer said,.

They go for a third straight College World Series appearance, beginning with the Empire 8 Tournament, this weekend May 4 through May 6.
