A mega-merger of defense contractors will not result in job reductions in Rochester.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer said not a single job will be lost in Rochester or Victor if the proposed merger between Harris and L3 Technologies is approved. The companies announced their intention to combine communication and technology companies by the middle of next year.

Harris alone employs some 3,800 people in Rochester, an area which the company has called home for generations.

L3, which has an engineering operation in Victor, employs 180 people.

Harris Chairman and CEO Bill Brown told Schumer all of the jobs at the companies' local campuses will be retained.

"We will not lose a single job," Schumer said in downtown Rochester Monday. "There are 4,000 jobs altogether. And we will likely grow jobs because of this merger."

Harris stock rose more than $18 a share on the first day of trading since the merger was announced over the weekend.

A company spokesperson said the new entity has about $16 billion in annual revenues and employs more than 48,000 people worldwide.

Harris Corporation has five locations in the Rochester area and provides communications equipment used by the military; L3 Technologies has one in the town of Victor in Ontario County.

The spokesperson also noted that the merger "creates opportunities for growth within the region and expanding career opportunities for our existing employees here."

Doug Hendee, CFP Chief Sales Officer at Brighton Securities, said the merger is a move in the right direction for the Rochester area.

“As the companies continue to grow chances are they’ll be adding engineers and manufacturing people here in Rochester,” Hendee said.
