The park was dedicated Saturday, in memory of a woman killed over a decade ago.

“It doesn’t get easier. It’s not like I blanked it out of my head, but I try to keep on moving,” The victim’s father, Robert Grayson, said. “But it will always be there. It’ll never go away.”

Grayson spent his Saturday remembering his daughter, Latasha Grayson-Shaw, who was stabbed and killed in broad daylight, defending her 12-year-old daughter from a mob attack in 2007.

“She was a good mother,” said Grayson. “She loved to work, she loved fishing and activity like that,” Grayson said. “I miss taking her fishing; we used to go fishing together.”

She was killed 11 years ago Saturday, near this intersection of Dewey Avenue and Driving Park Avenue. While one man serves time for taking part in the gang assault, no one has been convicted in her death.

“Let’s understand what happened here, let’s never forget,” The city of Rochester’s mayor Lovely Warren said. “But let’s not let it happen to someone else.”

Now, a pocket park at that same intersection is being dedicated in Shaw's memory.

“This is about peace,” Vice President of the city Council Adam McFadden said. “We’re taking a bad situation, a bad experience, a tragic experience, and turning it into something positive.”

It’s a park with a message and meaning.

“It needs to be a constant reminder, that one life lost is one life too many. Look at all the family members that the hole in their life doesn’t go away.” Warren said.

“I know every time I drive by here it’ll be like she’s still there in my heart,” Grayson said. “She’ll always be in my heart.”

Those at the event want others to see this park, and think twice before taking a life, both city leaders and family.

“We can have peace in our streets, we can make different decisions,” Warren said. “We can make different decisions, that’s what we have, we all have free will.”

“Only thing I can say is stop the violence,” Grayson said. “We have a problem; put it in the hands of police. Let them take care of that.”
