New security measures took effect this weekend for the first time after a series of fights at last week’s Wilson-East high school football game in Rochester.

“What happened last week was a tragedy," Daren Floyd said, who's nephew plays for Wilson. "It was a game everybody was looking forward to, and everybody wanted to see, and it was spoiled by some young kids who came here for other reasons.”

Students under the age of 18, who don’t belong to either team playing, must be accompanied by another student or parent to get a ticket. And the city of Rochester must approve security at all school events, like they would a festival.

“I’m just excited about the measures they have in place, and moving forward, I don’t think we’ll have those kind of issues moving forward,” said parent Victor Davidson.

One parent does say it’s an extreme measure, but understands why it has to happen.

“Whenever there’s something major going on, the response to that effect is usually a dramatic effect," Sir-On Bantun said. “But you can’t expect the treatment to stop if you’re performing that way.”

Others are just glad it means their kids will be safe.

“It’s here for the protection of the people, and the people who want to watch the game without that kind of interference.” Floyd said.
