SPRING LAKE, NC — Imagine the force of 10 feet high flood water hitting the room you are sitting in right now.

  • Floodwaters continue to recede in Carolinas
  • Latest Toll: 37 deaths; More than 160,000 without power
  • Storm Season 2018

That’s how intense the flooding was in Spring Lake, North Carolina earlier this week. Incredibly there was no loss of life but there was loss.

Now that the floodwaters have receded, the full impact of Hurricane Florence's punch to the Carolinas is coming into view. The result in many areas are shells of buildings that were battered by rushing waters.

Florence is blamed on causing at least 37 deaths and more than 160,000 people remain without power.

Power crews from across the south and midwest are in Spring Lake, just north of Fayetteville, helping get power restored.

"Just thankful that they are here," said Spring Lake resident Kendra Nigh. "It was definitely a sight for sore eyes when we saw them rolling in here this morning."

Meanwhile, NYPD search and rescue crews are now working to clear areas along the river, submerged by flood waters just two days ago. And Town Manager Daniel Gerald says the department of transportation is now inspecting bridges and roads still shutdown, to make sure they are safe for traffic.

"The faster the recovery process can go will be the fastest that the town can go as far as opening," Gerald said.

And getting this town back open all hinges on the roads re opening. That may happen by next week, Gerald said.

But for now people here are just thankful the power is back on, and supplies are now getting in.
