FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Flooding remains an issue in North Carolina, especially near rivers.

  • Flooding still a big problem
  • Cape Fear Rriver in Fayetteville crested
  • City working to drain flooding

The Cape Fear River in Fayetteville crested early Wednesday morning, causing the Person Street Bridge to be shutdown. Other bridges in town remain open but are being watched closely.

The Cape Fear River hit 61 and a half feet overnight, just shy of the expected 62 feet. Although the water didn't go as high as expected, the flooding is still historic.

With the Cape Fear River so high, the water has pushed into smaller rivers and waterways that have now spilled their banks.

The water is so deep in a neighborhood on the south east side of town near the log canal, you can't even drive a car all the way in.

Flood waters also rose more than 2 feet near Lot Creek overnight and has impacted a few businesses.

The Cape Fear River isn't expected to drop below flood stage until this weekend. Until then, the city will continue to pump out the storm sewer system with the hopes that will help drain the flooding more quickly.
