A teacher is being touted as a hero for his efforts to save both the driver and passenger of the car that crashed the barrier and landed in the Irondequoit Bay outlet.

“It was scary.  It was very nerve-wracking to see a car in the water and people there and I guess it could have turned out worse,” said Sean Johnson, a teacher at Neil Armstrong Elementary School.  “But luckily the two people looked fine and you know there was nobody else in the car so it was I guess the best odds for the situation.

Johnson is a first grade teacher who helped to pull the man and woman from the water after their car crashed.

His principal, colleagues and students all celebrated his efforts.

He and his wife heard the crash when they were out Saturday night driving around trying to get their baby to fall asleep.

Both are teachers in the Gates Chili School District.
