ROCHESTER N.Y. – The Catholic Diocese of Rochester received and is reviewing a subpoena from the state attorney general's office as part of an ongoing investigation into the sexual abuse of children.

The AG’s investigation looks into the state's dioceses and other church entities that may have potentially tried to cover up allegations of sexual abuse by members of the clergy.

This comes after law enforcement told the Associated Press that the AG's office subpoenaed all Roman Catholic Dioceses in New York State.

As part of the investigation, the office introduced a hotline (212-416-8060) and website for victims of clergy abuse.

Sandra Doorley, the Monroe County DA, said that there are no active cases under investigation in Monroe County or surrounding area, but she is encouraging anyone impacted to utilize the services.

“It’s going to give victims an avenue to call out and ask for help," she said. "It's just another way for them to reach out. Sometimes picking up the phone and calling someone is a lot easier than making an appointment or coming down and seeing someone. I hope this extends to other dominations and other religions. We see this occurring in other churches as well, not just the Catholic Church.”

The Catholic diocese of Rochester did respond with a statement:

“We have a longstanding policy of cooperation with law enforcement and certainly it will continue in this process. We encourage all victims to report to civil authorities. We report to civil authorities allegations of the sexual abuse of a minor.

A detailed list of our initiatives to protect children can be found at https://www.dor.org/wp-content/uploads/Update-on-Safe-Environment-Efforts2018.pdf

The two resources provided can be used by anyone with information or impacted.

An investigator will review the allegations while the attorney general along with law enforcement works to protect victims’ and witnesses’ identities."
