SENECA LAKE, N.Y. — Debris is cluttering more than homes along the eastern shore of Seneca Lake after last week's severe rainstorm that dropped heavy rain and touched off flash flooding.

The damage also extends out to the lake itself.

State police report the damage is done well beyond Lodi.

Aerial images of the lake show a fallout zone up to five miles wide.

"It's really quite traumatic," Kristen Jennings said. "Pictures don't do it justice."

Marine units and tug boats continue removing dangerous clutter from the water. DEC, Sheriff's Office, National Guard and State Police teams keep piling up what the land laid waste.

"We're just trying to make the lake safe so when people are finally able to enjoy it, they don't get injured," Trooper Mark O'Donnell of the New York State Police said.

"There're obviously hazards. Propane, gasoline, diesel and everything from home that can be imagined."

Authorities offer a warning to boaters, water and jet skiers and swimmers who head out onto Seneca for the boating season's home stretch.

"Use your head. Don't get crazy. Watch for floating debris. We won't get it all. We've gotten a lot but we won't get it all," O'Donnell said.
