BROCKPORT N.Y. — Deanna Richardson and Benjamin Moore of Hamlin lost everything following a fire Saturday night, including their dream home.

“Pure panic,” Richardson said. “It was adrenaline that hit us and we knew, just get out. That’s all I could think was to get the kids and get out.”

Their daughter, Hannah Richardson, 13, was devastated. The family had only lived in their home for two weeks.

“It was kind of sad to lose it, because we had just gotten, but it was amazing the time we were in there,” she said.

The community is stepping up to help all across the board, doing everything from raising cash to raising spirits.

Jimmy Zisovski, owner of Jimmy Z’s in Brockport, is one of those assisting the family. On Monday, he hosted a fundraiser donating 20 percent the day's proceeds to the family.

“The family is in a time of need," he said. "If it was my house I would be looking for help, so we’re all here to help.”

Tanya Seffens organized the fundraiser. She says as a social worker, it's in her nature to help. It's her goal to have the family back in a house, fully furnished, by the time school starts.

Seffens said community members have already donated food, clothes and gift cards for pet supplies and even life-saving medication for Hannah.

“I’m a type 1 diabetic so I need an insulin pump to survive," she said. "We lost the insulin, my incisions sites and everything I needed, so to be able to get that at a low cost was really cool."

The family says they are planning on rebuilding their home on the Hamlin property.

“Spoke to the insurance company today and the adjustor out there to kind of survey what’s going on and let us know what our next plans were but nothing is set in stone,” Moore said.
