ELBA, N.Y. — A historic inn in Genesee County has been destroyed by flames.

Firefighters responded to the Stumblin’ Inn on Main Street in the town of Elba around 9 a.m. Sunday for a four-alarm fire.

When they arrived on scene, flames were coming out the windows on both floors. Portions of the roof collapsed shortly after.

Firefighters told Spectrum News everyone had safely exited the building by the time they arrived.

The owner of a diner next to the inn says a woman came into the restaurant for water to try to put out the fire with before it spread.

"A lady came into the restaurant and she said, 'There's a fire over there, can I get a bucket of water to put it out?' She wasn't very excited or nothing. My dishwasher brought a bucket of water over there, and I guess it was right on the floor, a little fire on the floor. By the time he got there, it blew the window out so he backed off and came home,” said Doug Chappius, Elba Diner owner.

Firefighters say the building is likely a total loss.

The cause is still under investigation.
