ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings hosted the first annual Plates Run Thursday night.

Runners were required to finish four 10 oz. "trash cans" filled with mac salad, home fries and meat sauce all while trekking a mile-long course through Frontier Field.

"We'd seen some other races around the country where people ate something then ran and we thought 'why not do a Plates Mile this year and see how that goes?'" said Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason.

Over 100 participants signed up to put their affection for plates to the ultimate test.

"I think it's just one thing that people in our city have a tremendous amount of pride in," said Mason.

"It's one of the seventh wonders of the world, the garbage plate. It was really cool, it was a lot of fun," said Corey Sauers of Rochester.

"It's just what we're known for, honestly, that's why we felt like we had to be here for the race," said Scott Cameron of Penfield.

However, the task proved a little too difficult for some runners.

"Yeah, it was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, I was like 'oh, it's just little cups.' Not in this heat. It was fun though, I'm glad they did it," said Danielle Sauers of Rochester.

Mason says they plan to continue the tradition next year.
