ROCHESTER N.Y. – The rising heat at the front of summer forced some outdoor sporting events to be cancelled as a precaution to keep young athletes safe.

For the first time in 36 years, that included the Eddie Meath All-Star game, as the forecast called for temperatures in the 90s during the time the game would be played.

Before resigning as chairman this year, Dick Cerrone served the Eddie Meath high school football event for 35 years. He said speaking with the event committee, “We knew we couldn’t get on the field and I had to call the coaches. We’ve got kids who are going away — going on vacation —you got some coaches leaving.'”

Cerrone also said after delaying the game twice on Sunday and, sharing thoughts of pushing the game to the following day, the committee decided it was for the best to cancel.

He adds even though the game would have been the last of the long-running event, it’s far from a total loss.

The Eddie Meath All-Star Game benefits have collected between $5,000-$10,000 for the Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong Memorial Medical Center.
