BROCKPORT N.Y. — Dozens of kids and teens blind or visually impaired from across New York State were full of pep were excited for what was to come of summer camp.

They are able to participate in team sports. They swim, bike, stand-up paddle boarding in a team effort.

“It is our week-long sports camp for kids that are blind and visually impaired,” said Tiffany Mitrakos, assistant director and sports specialist.

Among the 52 campers attending the 23rd Camp Abilities Sports Camp in Brockport, Abbey Wahlers. The 11-year-old said she is prepared after attending two other similar camps.

“I’m really excited for all of the activities,” said Wahlers.

The campers are split-up between four teams. Wahlers’ teammate, 12-year-old Sean Meek, says even though he’s been to camp before, he is always eager to try something new. He said,

“I want to try a solo bike instead of a tandem," Meek said. "I’ve done it at my house and my coach wants to see if I can do it this year.”

The program also allows the campers to hear from Paralympic sailors, swimmers and skiers. Program coordinators say it gives the group an extra boast of motivation.

“I can actually be successful, I can go out and run a marathon or do a race and do these different activities so having those people they can actually look up to and see firsthand that just because I have visual impairment, does not mean that I can’t continue to excel in activities,” said Mitrakos.
