LIVONIA, N.Y. — Livingston County sheriff's deputies say a female pedestrian is dead after she was hit by a commercial vehicle Monday afternoon in Livonia.

It happened at the intersection of Center Street and Richmond Mills Road shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Investigators say an eastbound van from Isaac Heating and Air Conditioning hit a pedestrian and then plowed into a utility pole.

The victim has been identified as 59-year-old Judy Gillis.

Judy's husband, Steven Gillis, says she was taking the dog out and getting the mail before she was struck by the vehicle. Steve says they were married for 40 years and have known each other since they were 16-years-old. He says she was a sefless person who cared about helping others.

“They’re a very loving family, he loves his wife. Really loves his wife you can see it in his eyes when he talks and the feelings the same with her,” said Karen Brol, neighbor.

The speed limit on the road is 35 miles per hour, but neighbors say many people don't slow down after it switches from 55 miles per hour just past the hill on the road.

National Grid reported a couple hundred outages in the area earlier in the evening.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

The president of the company Judy worked for, the Genesee Valley Penny Saver also issued a statement, saying in part:

"Judy was a very thoughtful person and diligent worker, always putting the company first. Greatly valued for her organizational skills and an ever increasing knowledge of our advertising community. She will be greatly missed. Because of her position as Assistant to the Sales Manager, she had her hand on the pulse of the company and worked very hard to ensure our success."

In response to the crash Isaac Heating and Air Conditioning released a statement saying in part:

"The entire team at Isaac Heating & Air Conditioning was saddened to learn of an accident involving one of our vehicles. We are working closely with authorities to support their investigation."

“When I saw the pole down and I saw 911 I went over to the gentleman and asked him if he was okay and he said I fell asleep and I asked him if he was hurt and he said no,” added Brol.
