ROCHESTER N.Y. – Four Democratic candidates faced off on Friday in a debate for New York's 25th Congressional District seat previously held by the late Louise Slaughter.

Robin Wilt, Rachel Barnhart, Adam McFadden and Joe Morelle participated in Friday night’s event, hosted by WROC and The League of Women Voters.

At one point, WROC’s Adam Chodak asked a question submitted by The League of Women Voters, quizzing each candidate on whether they would vote to impeach President Trump.

Wilt: “Right now, we do have people picking up the mantel of holding the president accountable for his misdeeds and I would utterly be on board with it.”

Barnhart: “I would vote to impeach if there was evidence of crimes and misdemeanors, absolutely. We need to follow due processes and we would need to look at the articles.”

McFadden: “This isn’t whether or not to impeach Donald Trump, because if we impeach him, Mike Pence is no better than Donald Trump. He might be worse.”

Morelle:  “Unworthy of the position, his extremist views have damaged America already. I think of what we ought to do is make a priority to ensure that the Moeller investigation goes forward—unimpeded and that congress stands up and makes sure that happens.”

One of the night’s discussions occurred over healthcare— the cost and if candidates are for universal or single payer systems?

Wilt: “I back single payer, expanded and improved Medicare for All: HR676.”

Barnhart: “I am a proponent of single payer healthcare — the Medicare for all government run equitable insurance ran program.”

McFadden: “Favoring a universal healthcare system similar to Japan or the Netherlands. Why? Because they have the highest length of life?”

Morelle:  “We have to reform the Medicare system entirely and we need to expand it so it has vision, hearing. We need to eliminate racial disparities.”

Other topics included, affordable housing, photonics, and the creation of jobs.

Following the debate, candidates will go head-to-head in a Democratic primary on June 26th.

The winner will then challenge Republican James Maxwell in November's general election.

The 25th Congressional District includes all of Monroe County, with the exception of the town of Hamlin, a small portion of Clarkson, and the southern portions of Wheatland, Rush and Mendon.
