Trevyan Rowe's death has sparked changes to Rochester City School District`s attendance policies.

“As of now, attendance is taken in the first 15 minutes and the robocall is made within an hour,” said RCSD Chief of Schools, Dr. Idonia Owens.

The 14-year-old walked away from School 12 in March after getting off the bus and heading in the opposite direction unnoticed. His body was later found in Genesee River.

Following the tragedy, RCSD created its first centralized attendance team.

The 10 staff members make phone calls to students' homes if they are marked absent from school.

“These personal connections with families are making a difference because we are able to update a lot of new contact information and the attendance team is actually making up to 1,000 phone calls a day,” said Dr. Owens.

An investigation concluded that three teachers marked Trevyan present the day he went missing and tried to change attendance records as the investigation unfolded.

“We do have a system of accountability for teachers taking accurate attendance as well. That`s something else that has been sured up,” added Dr. Owens.

The new attendance team is supplied with a list of schools, robocalls, and contact information as part of RCSD`s mission to keep track of their students.

“We have gone above and beyond to make sure each child is accounted for because we do care about our children`s safety 100 percent,” said Dr. Owens.
