BATAVIA, N.Y. – A vigil was held to remember 41-year-old Terry Toote, who was fatally stabbed on Thursday.

Officers responded to a call regarding a fight just before midnight on Thursday.

That's when they found Toote as he lay in the street with a stab wound. He was rushed to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Oraid Blackshear, 13, says he will miss Toote deeply.

“It’s kind of hard to know that person you just seen yesterday is gone and you’re not going to see him again,” said Blackshear. “He was always there and basically like a father figure to a lot of kids.”

The Batavia Police Department said that after multiple calls regarding fights in the area over the last several weeks, they installed a video surveillance camera and had street lighting enhanced, which was vital in the investigation.

Looking up at the camera that beams down on Central Avenue, Falk said he didn't think it would prevent crimes.

“It’s not going to stop people. They put the camera up here and the incident still happened.”
