LYONS, N.Y. — Assemblyman Bob Oaks, 66, says after 26 years representing Wayne County, nearly a dozen towns in Cayuga and several towns in Oswego, he says he has decided to not seek re-election in the 130th Assembly District.

“It wasn’t done easily. I’ve done it for 26 years but it is time,” said Oaks.

The Republican of Macedon was elected to the State Assembly in 1992 and just before, he served for 10 years as the Wayne County Clerk. Even though he’s not seeking re-election he says he wants to remain active in the district.

“I’m not going anywhere, I’m going to be here in the community, I’ve spent so long — I’ve mentioned, 36 years of being in elective office," Oaks said.

In addition, Oaks also served as chairman of the Wayne County Republican Committee. In Wayne County, Lyons Town Supervisor Brian Manktelow, 54, said he will soon announce his run for Oaks’s seat.

“I understand politics, I understand what’s important for our county, I understand what New York State is doing up there and how it affects us watches and every day, so, that’s really why I want to run. I love helping people,” Manktelow said.

Manktelow was also candidate for the 2016 NY State Senate race for the 54th district.

“Certainly I think with Brian making that announcement I’m sure that he will be one of the strong individuals that will be considered for that," Oaks said of Manktelow's run. "Other individuals may start to come forward too, we’ll see.”

Oaks said moving forward he wants to see “What are our small communities going to look like on down the road, maybe there’s some things we can do proactively, now, to make sure that they are more thriving and make sure they have a more successful future going forward.”

Oaks began his 11th term in January of 2013.

He is the second member of Cayuga County's state legislative delegation to make the announcement to not seek re-election this year. In April, State Senator John DeFrancisco announced he too would not run for re-election.
