ROCHESTER, N.Y. —The warmer weather the last few days is giving trees, plants and flowers that much-needed push, but for many, it means spring allergies.

While Rochesterians appreciate 60 degree days after a long winter, the sneezing and wheezing due to seasonal allergies are unwelcome.

Be proactive —  Congestion, sneezing and itchy eyes: Allergists say what we are dealing with now is tree pollen. The severity of the conditions change based on the fauna of the area. Doctors say it's best to treat before the sneeze, so take the allergy medication well before your first sneeze.

Worse when wet — April showers bring more symptoms as rain promotes plant and pollen growth.

"The things that tend to bother us are the things we can't see," said Dr. Mahta Mortezavi, Rochester Regional health Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology. "So in April and May the trees pollinate and the pollen level is going to start rising. Even with just a couple of days of warmer weather we are going to see an uptick in detectable amounts so people are going to start feeling more symptoms. In June and July the grasses pollinate and then later in the summer, August until the first frost, weeds pollinate. So obviously if you have environmental allergies this season can be bittersweet."

Anyone with allergy symptoms is encouraged to visit a board certified allergist for a simple skin test to help find specific answers about what is causing your symptoms. Knowing triggers can with prevention and treatment.
