A Rochester woman accused of trying to kill her 7-year-old granddaughter and herself by overdosing on pills was sentenced to more than a decade behind bars.

Stephany Ruckdeschel, 54, was sentenced on Wednesday to 12 years in prison and 7 years post release supervision after pleading guilty to the attempted murder charge.

A no contact order of protection was also issued.

"She was in fact trying to put her granddaughter to sleep forever and take her own life," said Senior Assistant District Attorney Amanda Balling during a court appearance in November.

The incident occurred in Ruckdeschel’s Wetmore Park home on October 12. Family members discovered Ruckdeschel and her granddaughter unconscious and called an ambulance. They were both rushed to the hospital and survived.

A spokesperson for the District Attorney's office says the child is now healthy thanks to the swift life-saving actions by first responders.
