ROCHESTER, N.Y. — On Sunday in Rochester, organ donation recipients, donors and medical professionals all came together to make a difference for the hundreds of local patients waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant.

"It's not only about creating awareness, it's to celebrate the people in our community. And we're looking for the outreach, we're looking to expand and we're looking to help patients in our area," said kidney transplant recipient Julia Yaw.

"It was a beautiful bonding experience throughout the city, just getting to know more people and hearing their story and hopefully encouraging them along the way," said living donor Olivia Morgante.

Sunday's event featured some very special models that are patients, donors and medical professionals. Last year, Morgante heard that a member of her church needed a new kidney. Morgante had herself tested before even telling Yaw that she was thinking about becoming a living donor.

"But it just so happened that we were a perfect match, so once they found that out, they moved things right along and February of last year I was able to donate my kidney to her," said Morgante. "We're kind of like the kidney twins, I don't know how else to explain it."

"She had already been tested and approved. We matched closer genetically as sisters than we did as strangers. It was a complete perfect match," said Yaw.

Just a few months after their transplant was complete, the two organized the Catwalk for Kidneys event.

"It's been a beautiful bond between the two of us because both of us are just so extremely passionate about helping others in the community," said Morgante.

Unfortunately, that community recently lost two members to their disease.

"There will definitely be a void and we are walking for them today. This is why it's so important and why we need to keep this fight going until we save every patient that we can," said Yaw.
