Starting April 30, those who commute via the Skyway will have to learn a new way to work.

The state Department of Transportation hosted an open house Wednesday with information about detours and lane closures for a major repair project set to begin April 30.

All inbound traffic on the Skyway will use the outbound lanes from 5 -11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Outbound cars will use a detour on Ohio Street.

From noon until 3 a.m., everything will shift, with outbound traffic using the inbound lanes. Inbound traffic will be detoured.

It’ll be like this until at least November.

Some drivers who will be inconvenienced appear to be taking the detours in stride.

“It’s going to be slower because you’re going to have to put all that traffic on Louisiana Street or Smith Street but oh well,” said James Lehmann of Hamburg. “Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.”

This is the first phase of the project – work on the outbound lanes will begin next March.
