Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is joining President Donald Trump's legal team in defending him in the special counsel's Russia investigation.

That's according to a statement by Trump's personal attorney.

In the statement, Giuliani is cited as saying he wants this matter resolved quickly for the good of the country.

His law firm also released a statement, confirming Giuliani's departure.

It reads, "Mr. Giuliani is taking a leave of absence, effective today, for an unspecified period of time to handle matters unrelated to the law firm or its clients."

He will be joining a team negotiating terms of a possible Trump interview with Robert Mueller.

Two other former prosecutors are also joining the team.
