A civil lawsuit filed by the father of a University of Rochester student who was stabbed to death six years came to a stunning conclusion on Wednesday.

Jeffrey Bordeaux Jr. was stabbed to death by a fellow UR student, Darren Venable, during a fight at a fraternity party in 2011.

Venable was charged with second-degree murder but a judge decided he acted in self-defense and found him not guilty of the charges.

Jeffrey Bordeaux Sr. then filed a lawsuit against Venable.

But just before closing arguments on Wednesday, Bordeaux and his lawyer crafted a statement of conciliation, saying it was time for the families to come together and mourn their losses together.

After the statement was accepted by both sides, Bordeaux embraced Venable's mother and told her that he wanted the best for her family.

"And then Mr. Venable came. And when he came -- every time I think about it, a tear comes to my eye. But I hugged him, and I held him real tight for like two or three minutes and I cried on his shoulder. And tears came down my face and some went on him, and I told him that I forgave him. I told him I don't forget, but to honor Jeffrey and honor our family, what we stand for, I'm going to forgive him because God has given me the capacity to do that."

The Bordeaux family filed a suit against the university and the fraternity back in 2012, which was dismissed.

The university conducted an investigation following Bordeaux's death and said it's response was appropriate.
