The ABCs of dangerous driving habits really come down to Ds: distracted driving and driving drunk.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, in its new survey, shows that 88 percent of drivers feel distracted driving – talking or texting while behind the wheel – is the leading cause of crashes.

  • Aggressive driving came in second, with 68 percent of drivers attributing this as a cause of accidents.
  • Drugged or drunk driving are still in the top five, believed to be the cause of 55 percent and 43 percent of crashes, respectively.
  • Nearly 50 percent of drivers say they’re guilty of using the phone while driving.
  • Some 35 percent of those asked by AAA admitted to texting or reading email while on the road.

“With more than 37,000 deaths on U.S. roads in 2016, we need to continue finding ways to limit driving distractions and improve traffic safety,” said David Yang, executive director of AAA’s Foundation for Traffic Safety. “The Foundation’s work offers insight on drivers’ attitudes toward traffic safety and their behaviors, so we can better understand the issue and identify potential countermeasures to reduce crashes.”

One of those tools might already be in the drivers’ hand.

iPhones offer a “Do Not Disturb While Driving” setting, while AT&T customers can activate its DriveMode app, preventing calls from coming in while a car is in motion.
