ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Working smoke detectors are being credited for saving a home and some residents on Rochester's west side late Saturday night.

Firefighters were called to a home on Sawyer Street off Genesee Street around 11:30 p.m. for the report of a basement fire.

When crews arrived they discovered the fire was coming from a dryer in the basement.

Firefighters were able to contain the flames before they spread. They say working smoke detectors alerted the three people inside who all got out safely.

They'll be able to return to the home, which firefighters were able to ventillate and protect from major smoke damage.
